Reliving stupid things?

Alright so apparently this year I've found a way to revive things that I used to do in years past. This includes my deviant art account, drawing, teaching (it is my major now..), and now live journal. Go figure. Perhaps I'm going through a pseudo midlife crisis. Who knows. Regardless in order to break new ground for my art and what not I was thinking of buying a tablet. Unfortunately of course, they are obscenely expensive and anything remotely cheap I have this bad feeling is going to explode and remove my face (not literally but if it breaks soon after I get it or doesn't work well, I will remove my own face).

I found this on amazon which is an 8x6 tablet for 50 bucks. I also probably need a full edition of photoshop (being that I only have elements which is a shitty and expensive way of giving me barebones to work with,) but I can probably torrent that bitch up. Anyways was looking for some kind of input on the tablet being that my knowledge of them is fairly limited.

rawk,
we'll see if I post again.. well ever.
Alex

i was listening to some music, and i have decided that i want to make a cover band just so we can do a set of ridiculously high energy music. actually i wanted to make a cover band period, but now i have a bigger goal. anyways, if we record, the album will definately be called 'this heart's on fire: the album.' as the name suggests, we will be playing some wolf parade.

the bands i was currently thinking about for high energy indie rock were, Wolf Parade - This Hearts on Fire, I'll Believe in Anything, The Walkmen - The Rat, North Pole, Xiu Xiu - Clowne Towne, I Luv the Valley OH, Pedro the Lion - Rapture, Radiohead - There, There, Blood Brothers - ANYTHING, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - ANYTHING.

There's more i'm sure, but i couldn't think of anything else at 2 am last night. leave a comment if you're interested or you think its sweetastic or if you have more bands/tracks that would be fantastic.

Also the band will definately be called Those Guys We Are.
i really should do a real entry, but i just don't feel like now is the time. maybe i just don't really care too much. anyways, today was tracy's birthday, so happy birthday to the new 18 year old. she now joins the ranks of many who can buy cigarettes, vote, and buy and star in porn. hurrahs are in order.

also today was the last day of the first session at the camp. kinda sad to see the kids go after only 2 weeks (really only a week and a half). most of the kids are staying for more sessions, but to see any of them go puts a sense of inevitablity and fanality into the sessions. i don't doubt that it'll still be fun, its just sad to think that its 1/4 over. doesn't sound like much but i just wish that it would never end.

that sounded gayer than i had realized.

whichever.

also, if you don't already watch paranoia agent, catch the episode on adult swim's fix this week. its very much of a stand alone episode so don't worry if you don't know the current running plot.

have a good weekend all

As much as I like to think that I'm on the ball regarding all things that I am passionate about, it's just so hard to remain hip on everything.

But here's a little racism fiasco that went down on the 14th of June. To quickly summarize, on a nationally known radio channel, the voice of cnn headline news anchor made a joke regarding the state of Earth and global warming. He played a short clip from An Unconvienent Truth, and after the part regarding the flooding of Shanghai he stopped the tape to make a comment. As to not ruin the suspence for all of you, I'll let you listen to the radio clip itself.

http://mediamatters.org/static/audio/beck-20060614-shanghai.mp3

Did you listen to it? Ridiculous. First, Shanghai is one of the most populated cities on the face of the planet. So to mock the loss of a massive amount of life is ridiculous. Second, to look at a situation like global warming and the rising of sealevels at a catastrophic level and then to pause to say well fuck the chinese, is just absurd. Seriously, that's like a hospital burning down and patients dying and cracking, well who cares about the cancer patients all they do is throw up after kemo anyways. This man is a fucking anchor on CNN Headline News. He knows the fucking rules.

Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

You can read more on the incident in this article.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200606150002

[[EDIT]]

The funny thing about researching stuff is that you often come across more things that are equally ridiculous (in this case a bad way)

Although this time it is not a CNN headliner, it is local news.

Although I don't listen to too much clear channel radio apparently this happened on the "Free Beer and Hot Wings Show" that is aired on our very own 97.5 The Hawk. Go fucking figure. Here's an account of an event that took place not too long ago.

The departure of Howard Stern from "free" radio has apparently left an offensiveness vacuum for morning DJs in the NYC metropolitan area. This morning, the "Free Beer and Hot Wings Morning Show" on 97.5 The Hawk, the call-in topic of discussion was reminiscences of times listeners, as children, had been lost or left behind by their parents.

At approximately 8:15 am, a female caller called in to tell about the time when her parents had accidently left her at a Chinese restaurant, and she had to walk home. On DJ (possibly "Free Beer" -- I can't tell these idiots apart) told her that she was lucky she hadn't been "sold into slavery" or "cooked". She was also asked if she tried to speak with the waitstaff, at which point the other DJ ("Hot Wings"?) started to make "ching-chong"-type noises. The first DJ then praised him on his "excellent Chinese impersonation", and the second DJ then made more "ching-chong"-type noises, followed by "Me so sorry."

They then discussed a summer job that another DJ "Vance" had at a Chinese restaurant. One DJ then stated that "Chinese food stinks" and asked why it was that when one went to a pizza restaurant, one did not smell like pizza, but when one went to a Chinese restaurant, "you stink."

This happened this morning, June 12, 2006, between approximately 8:15 to 8:21 AM. I'm glad that I was alone in the car, and didn't have to explain to my son why these idiots were mocking his heritage on-air.

Although I have yet to find any other accounts of said show, its hard to make something like this up. Funny part is, even as an Asian living in the area, I hadn't even heard of this until I found it online.
Again, I have yet to find any other accounts of said incident, but point is not the specific incident but rather its common and repeated occurance.

The Lion King is one of the most complete movies I have ever seen and quite possibly will ever see. Everything is just amazingly perfect. Fuck the fact that it's a kid's movie, it is a lion rendition of HAMLET. Not for kids in any way shape or form. Do this right now if possible. If you have the special edition version or any version, pop it in and turn it on. Now watch the movie, but look at everything that is NOT the focus of the frame. Look at the ground, look at the trees, look at the negative space, look at the color choices, look at the contrast. Just everything. Then you will understand what I mean by a complete film.

The musical choices are brillant, the references and script are amazing beyond words, the voice actors, the animation, the art, all fucking ridiculous. In every aspect that a film can be great, The Lion King raises the bar.
Also, one of the first appearences of mature themes in a children's movie because children should understand how life works?
Also, the animators were the B-list animators because the hot project at the time was Beauty and the Beast?
RIDICULOUS.

Compare the completeness and attention to detail of EVERY SINGLE FRAME of The Lion King with any other movie (especially if you're trying to pick a Disney best,) and there's no competition. Look at the complexity of the background and the use of actual focus in comparison to say Aladdin. Nothing against Aladdin, but there's not even close to a comparison.
Also, the actual voice actors for the characters did all the singing?
Also, attention to anatomy of animals is amazing (with the exception of those meant to be a characature)?
RIDICULOUS

I really need to find myself a copy of the special edition, and so do all of you.

Dear intarwub,
sorry for ignoring you these past couple of weeks. However, while I do apologize, I do not find it appropriate to adjust my actions. Hopefully you understand. Friends in real life take priority over friends online. Not to say that I take for granted the many times you have kept me company during slow afternoons, late nights, and even during class, because I remember and much appreciate your pressence during those trying times. However, there are times when two entities have to realize that there simply needs to be a hiatus in a relationship to make room for other things. I hope you understand and that you will learn to forgive me. I still love you internet, there just isn't enough time to go around.

Alexander Eng

On a more serious note, check this article/list. I agree with most of it with the exception of the Memoirs of a Geisha stuff. Sure we can all bitch and moan about accuracy of cast members, but hey, its hollywood, how often do any directors cast with cultural accuracy. Anyways, check it: http://www.nypress.com/19/19/news&columns/feature2.cfm

it is not often that i jump onto a bandwagon type movement given the nature of the counter-culture which i embrace and love so dearly. However, it is and has been the case that i do feel strongly about the mainstream issue of portrayal of asians and the issues of asian americans. it is my personal opinion that in all actuality, today asians have to deal with the greatest amount of racism of all ethnicities in the United States. I only speak of the United States because, one i live here, and two the role of asians in other countries is mainly restricted to the america's, asia and some countries in europe. And this isn't some liberal thing that i picked up in college, it is something that i have been passionate about my entire life and clearly have first hand knowledge of.

I think that in so many ways asian americans pay the consequences of poor portrayal in popular culture and in the media. Even when people think that they're are forwarding the movement, it is usually the opposite. Case and point, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and any other asian actor who knows 'kung fu' and makes money off of that is generally a reinforcement of asian stereotypes. They play the quiet asian guy who can do magical martial arts and fly around and believe in stupid asian rituals and what not. Also, take for example the wu-tang clan. Although they claim to embrace the asian culture, in actuality all they are really doing is portraying a stereotype for asians and exploiting the culture to make money for themselves. It promotes ignorance of all other aspects of our culture, ignoring the great advancements in art, architecture, sculpture, film, written language, clothing, food, etc.

And the worst part of it all, is not simply that it is happening, but the fact that respect and modesty are so ingrained in our upraising that we don't stand up for ourselves, and that we don't do anything to change this continuing and worsening injustice. We play the role of the quiet submissive asian and we are expected to do so. People walk all over us because we're asian and it's stupid and it has to stop.

I was thinking about creating a little website project directed towards the advancement of asians in the world. Yes lots of these sites already exist, one of my personal favorites is AngryAsianMan.com, however I feel that these sites still maintain that submissive stereotype. I want to create a site that will be a place not only for news of what's going on in the world regarding asians, but also will be a place to organize and begin doing whatever is necessary to start change. I think that a lot of ethnicities are waiting around for leaders to take them by the hand lead them into revolution. I think that a movement must be created and I think that someone just needs to take the initiative to put the ball in motion.

Please give some feedback with regards to how you feel about this.
Happy Asian Heritage Month

[[EDIT]]

Because sometimes someone has said it better...
